Österreichische Kultur zum Silvester

Da ich gestern mit dem Buch über Romane fertig geworden bin, mußte ich  mir heute ein Neues aussuchen. Und natürlich will ich zum Jahreswechsel etwas "Besonderes" lesen, schliesslich wird mich dieses Buch ins nächste Jahr begleiten. Geworden ist es schliesslich etwas Österreichisches von der Art, die ich früher so gerne gelesen habe. Bücher, die in den 50er oder 60er-Jahrens des vorigen Jahrhunderts geschrieben wurden und die immer einen ganz besondern Zauber auf mich ausgeführt haben. Leider gibt es das Antiquariat beim Hintermayer in der Neubaugasse ja nicht mehr - so bleibt mir immer nur, nach Schmankerln beim Flohmarkt-Hintermayer-Standel zu schauen.

Gestern gab es ein Gratis-Büchlein vom Kurier, das man bei der Teilnahme am Adventkalender-Spiel bekommen hatte. Ich habe schon gar nicht mehr daran gedacht, mich aber sehr gefreut, als es im Postkasten gelegen ist.

Da der Mahfouz nur 100 Seiten hatte und Robert gestern früher zuhause war, habe ich ihn am Abend noch ausgelesen. Das Büchlein hat mir sehr gut gefallen, das bleibt bestimmt nicht mein letzter Mahfouz.

Heute habe ich dann schnell nach diesem Buch hier gegriffen:

Gerade eben hat mir der Postbote zwei weitere Päckchen von Amazon gebracht. Beide Bücher hätten erst im Jänner, bzw. noch später erscheinen sollen. Aber Amazon freut sich ja immer, wenn sie früher liefern können.

100, Geburtstag von Nagib Machfuß

Gestern Abend habe ich einen weiteren Teil der Sookie Stackhouse-Reihe fertig geworden, der mir wieder sehr gut gefallen hat. Diesesmal wurde Sookie kaum verletzt, obwohl es doch unter den Werwölfen und später auch unter den Vampiren Streitigkeiten und Krieg gab. Jedenfalls war es wieder eine kurzweilige Unterhaltung.

Heute habe ich dann, anläßlich des 100. Geburtstages des ägyptischen Schriftstellers Nagib Machfuß dann ein sehr dünnes Büchlein begonnen. Da es nur knapp 100 Seiten hat, werde ich es wohl bald ausgelesen haben - der Anfang hat mir auch schon sehr gut gefallen.

Heute war ich wieder einmal auf der Mariahilfer Straße - glücklicher vor Weihnachten zum letzten Mal. Sookie Stackhouse im Dezember

Heute habe ich das Buch mit den Interviews von Jacqueline Kennedy and Arthur Schlesinger ausgelesen. Ich fand es wahnsinnig interessant und Robert hat sich schon angetragen, die dazugehörigen CD's anzuhören. Das Buch war auch wunderschöngestaltet und mit vielen Fotos ergänzt. Unbedingt empfehlenswert, wenn man an amerikanischer Zeitgeschichte interessiert ist.

Heute Abend habe ich dann mit meinem Dezember-Buch der Southern Vampire Mysteries-Serie begonnen, nämlich mit dem 8. Band:

Plot summary: After the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina and the man-made horror of the explosion at the vampire Summit, Sookie Stackhouse is safe but dazed, yearning for things to get back to normal. But her boyfriend, the weretiger Quinn, is missing.

She then learns that she is descended from fairies, and is 1/8 fairy herself. Her beloved grandmother had an affair with a half-fairy, and had two children with him. While her grandfather is dead, her fairy great-grandfather, Niall Brigant, is alive and seeks to meet her.

Sookie is soon drawn into investigating several mysterious deaths among the local Were community. Her telepathy and status as a 'friend of the pack' forces her to mediate between two warring factions, whereupon she discovers that a pack displaced by Hurricaine Katrina has been killing the Shreveport Weres in order to take their place. There is a brief "war" between the two packs, with the Shreveport pack emerging victorious, Alcide now in charge.

At the same time, Felipe de Castro, King of Nevada, begins a violent campaign to wrest control of the kingdoms of Louisiana and Arkansas from the injured Queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq. The King's men kill the Queen and all of the sheriffs of Louisiana except for Eric, who surrenders in exchange for his life and the lives of all under his protection. Meanwhile, Sookie is upset to learn that she now has a very close blood bond with Eric, and can detect his feelings and know his location, and that she craves his company.

She learns that Quinn has been absent because his mother escaped from a were sanatorium where the mentally unstable weretiger was being held. In exchange for help in recapturing her, Quinn became the prisoner of the King of Nevada. She decides that given Quinn's familial responsibilities, she does not wish to have a romantic relationship with him. Instead she renews her relationship with Eric Northman.

She also has an upsetting encounter with the werepanthers of Hot Shot. Her sister-in-law, Crystal, is unfaithful to her brother, which means that, based on the particular traditions of Hot Shot, Sookie is required to break the hand of Crystal's uncle and Sookie's friend, Calvin Norris. This causes a rupture in her relationship with Jason, and she stops talking to him.

Sookie rescues King Felipe de Castro, Eric, and Sam Merlotte from the murderous intentions of Sigebert, earning her the King's gratitude. She then goes to visit her late cousin Hadley's child, whom she's never met and didn't know existed, and finds out he is a telepath like her. The book ends as she promises the boy and his father she'll be there to help whenever they need it.

Die Kennedys

Heute habe ich mein modernes Dornröschen-Märchen ausgelesen. Sicher, es ist ein modernes Märchen für Jugendliche, aber ich fand die Geschichte durchaus gut geschrieben und mir hat ja auch Beastly (Die Schöne und das Biest) sehr gut gefallen. Auch wenn es Teenie-Literatur ist, werde ich von dieser Autorin bestimmt noch mehr Märchen-Adaptionen lesen.

Heute Abend beim Wein habe ich dann mit dem neuesten Kennedy-Buch begonnen und schon das Vorwort, die Einführung und der Beginn des ersten Interviews hat mich gefangen genommen. Die Kennedys sind historisch mehr als interessant und Jacqueline Kennedy war eine ganz besondere Frau. Ich freue mich schon, wenn ich morgen in der U-Bahn weiterlesen kann.

Vampire im November

Fast pünktlich zum Kinostart von "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" beginne ich mit meinem November Vampirbuch. Mit etwas über 500 Seiten nicht gerade ein Leichtgewicht, aber da viele Fotos drinnen sind, wird es wohl relativ rasch gelesen sein.

Der kleine Hobbitt

Heute ist endlich das Päckchen mit Robert's Wunsch gekommen. Vorige Woche wurde es ja auf der Post verschlampt - und heute hätte ich dann beide Pakete abholen können. Robert hat das Hörspiel irgendwo im Radio oder auf YouTube gehört und wollte, das ich es ihm bestelle. Also habe ich gefragt, ob ich das Buch auch gleich mitbestellen soll. Ich kenne ihn ja - er will immer Beides haben.

Krimi aus England

Das Buch über die literarischen Streifzüge in London hat mir gut gefallen - obwohl es ein Deutscher geschrieben hat. Es war vielleicht nicht ganz so gut wie Anna Quindlens, aber doch nett und kurzweilig zu lesen. Deshalb bleibe ich nun literarisch gleich in England, allerdings  geht es diesesmal nicht um Schriftsteller und deren Werke, sondern um Mord.

Literarische Streifzüge in London

Heute habe ich den Bloomsbury Good Reading Guide ausgelesen. Ich war echt begeistert und Robert und ich haben doch auch schon einiges davon gelesen. Gestört hat mich nur, das z.B. Joyce Carol Oates nicht erwähnt wurde, und bei den Krimischriftstellerinnen Elizabeth George nicht aufgeführt wurde. Sicher, das Buch ist nur ein Auszug von all dem, was es an Literatur und Belletristik gibt - aber Oates ist eine hervorragende Schriftstellerin und nachdem alle anderen großen Damen der Krimis erwähnt wurden, hätte eigentlich auch die George dazugehört. Und kein einziger österreichischer Autor wurde erwähnt - die Deutschen natürlich schon. Trotzdem hat mir das Buch ganz toll gefallen.

Zu meiner Sammlung über Malta im 2. Weltkrieg habe ich heute ein Päckchen von Amazon bekommen. Ich habe das Buch bereits im August bestellt, und eigentlich sollte es erst im Februar 2012 wieder aufgelegt werden. Aber ich hatte Glück, und es wurde bereits jetzt neu veröffentlicht und so hatte ich es heute im Briefkasten. Jetzt müsste nur noch mein zweites Malta-Buch von Douglas Austin geliefert werden.- aber da hat Thalia wohl ein kleines Problemchen..

Da wir heute ja zum Ganslessen gehen, kann ich leider erst morgen Früh mit einem neuen Buch beginnen. Aber in die Fototasche passt das dicke Buch nicht hinein.

Sookie Stackhouse im November

Nach Julian Barnes, dem Man Booker Prize-Gewinner des Jahres 2011 habe ich heute Abend mit einem weiteren Band der "Southern Vampire Mysteries"-Serie begonnen. Wobei ich von Band 5 gleich zu Band 7 gewechselt habe, da ich den 6. Teil der Serie ja als Allererstes auf Deutsch gelesen habe.

Das Neue von Julian Barnes hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen und es war  interessant, welche tolle Geschichte Julian Barnes in 150 Seiten verpacken konnte. Andere Schriftsteller hätten das wieder auf Hunderte Seiten ausgewalzt.

Plot summary: The summit, which has attracted undead power players from all over the central United States, is sure to be tense, due in no small part to the ramping up of protests by the conservative, anti-vampire Fellowship of the Sun. Accused of murdering her husband, the King of Arkansas, Sophie-Anne is set to stand trial at the convention. The Queen is already in a precarious position, her power base weakened by the damage to New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina, and there are some vampires who would like to finish what nature started. Sophie-Anne's main accuser is Jennifer Cater, a vampire who had been training to be the king's lieutenant at the time of his death. Jennifer is determined to see Sophie-Anne staked in the sun for murdering the king, although Sookie knows the Queen is innocent of the crime.

Sophie-Anne plans to put Sookie's gift to good use, having her "listen in" on the thoughts of the humans working for the other vampires at the convention as well as for the hotel, as alliances are formed and allegiances tested in what can only be described as a political power struggle of potentially deadly implications. The story opens with Sookie entering Fangtasia to talk to Eric and those who pay him fealty, as they discuss the accusations against Sophie-Anne. Sookie agrees to work for Sophie-Anne, despite the warnings of her fairy godmother, Claudine, that being at the convention will forever tie Sookie to vampire politics in the mind of all of the attendees, in a very public way. Meanwhile, her relationship with Quinn heats up.

At the convention, Sookie meets Barry "Bellboy" Horowitz, the only other telepath she knows. Soon after they arrive, Jennifer Cater and most of the Arkansas entourage are brutally murdered, which simplifies the trial for the Queen. Sookie soon proves invaluable to the Queen as she makes the great suggestion that the Queen appoint her closest friend and "child," Andre, to be King of Arkansas, and then to marry him. Sookie also finds a bomb planted outside of the Louisiana suite, and saves the Queen. She also uncovers something shocking about Quinn—as a teen, he killed a group of men who were raping his mother, and then became indebted to some local vampires in order to cover up the crime. He had to work as a weretiger/gladiator in a ring for three years, and in the process became a fearsome fighter.

At the Queen's trial, Sookie saves the queen yet again as, being the only witness, she applies logic to prove that the queen is innocent and that her accusers are being manipulated. In response, one of the main accusers is staked right in the courtroom. Impressed with her usefulness, Andre accosts Sookie and begins to force her to exchange blood with him, to tie her permanently and closely to the queen. She escapes this violation only by the intercession of Eric, who has her exchange more blood with him. This third, major blood exhange with Eric causes Sookie to become more powerful, and frighteningly vampiric, even though she is still human. She can feel Eric very powerfully, and he now has the power to turn her into a vampire at any time. Sookie realizes with dread that she will never be free of Eric's control.

Sookie and Barry the Bellboy then puts together a number of clues they have had throughout the convention and realize that multiple bombs have been planted throughout the hotel by the Fellowship of the Sun, and they are set to go off during the daytime when the vampires will all be asleep and helpless. She and Barry's quick thinking enable some vampires and some humans to get free, and Barry and Sookie team up to use their telepathy to find injured humans. Sookie finds Andre, who has only minor injuries, and watches impassively as Quinn stakes him in order to free her from his control. Queen Sophie-Anne escapes, but loses her legs. Bill, Eric, and Pam escape with minor injuries, but the death toll for humans and vampires is very high.

Man Booker Prize Gewinner

Gestern Abend habe ich das Buch mit den verschiedenen Kapiteln aus den Penguin Classics ausgelesen und es hat mir gut gefallen.  Da ich mich heute Morgen wieder sehr schnell entscheiden musste, habe ich zum Buch des diesjährigen Man Booker Prize-Gewinners gegriffen - das ich gerade erst am Freitag von der Post geholt habe. Eine neue Amazon-Rate ist dann ab Mittwoch wieder auf der Post abzuholen.

Heute konnte ich von der Post wieder ein Amazon-Päckchen abholen - nicht alles, was ich bestellt habe. Aber ich bin mittlerweile ja an den Ratenversand gewohnt. Neuer Lesestoff

In der Straßenbahn wurde ich heute Morgen mit meinem Wissenschaftsbuch fertig, leider konnte es mich überhaupt nicht "packen". Es war nicht uninteressant, aber irgendwie halt leider auch nicht zündend. Ich habe mich durchgequält und vieles nur flüchtig gelesen.

Für heute Abend habe ich mir dann eine Anthologie ausgewählt, die es bei Thalia mal gratis gab. Der Penguin Verlag hat Kapitel aus bei Penguin verlegten Büchern in einer Anthologie zusammengefasst. Gelesen habe ich heute die ersten beiden Auszüge.

Die Einigkeit des Wissens

Gestern Abend habe ich "Falling Man" ausgelesen und war darüber enttäuscht. Vielleicht wäre es im englischen Original besser gewesen - in der deutschen Übersetzung klang es wie ein Schulaufsatz in Mitvergangenheit geschrieben. Und ich habe jetzt noch ein Buch von Don DeLillo hier liegen, mit über 1000 Seiten... aber es liegt schon ein paar Jahre, da kann es auch noch weiter warten.

Heute habe ich mich dafür entschieden:

Amazon.co.uk Review: The biologist Edward O. Wilson is a rare scientist: over a long career he has not only made signal contributions to population genetics, evolutionary biology, entomology and ethology, but also steeped himself in philosophy, the humanities and the social sciences. The result of his lifelong, wide-ranging investigations is Consilience (the word means "a jumping together", in this case of the many branches of human knowledge), a wonderfully broad study that encourages scholars to bridge the many gaps that yawn between and within the cultures of science and the arts. No such gaps should exist, Wilson maintains, for the sciences, humanities and arts have a common goal: to give understanding a purpose, to lend to us all "a conviction, far deeper than a mere working proposition, that the world is orderly and can be explained by a small number of natural laws." In making his synthetic argument, Wilson examines the ways (rightly and wrongly) in which science is done, puzzles over the postmodernist debates now sweeping academia, and proposes thought-provoking ideas about religion and human nature. He turns to the great evolutionary biologists and the scholars of the Enlightenment for case studies of science properly conducted, considers the life cycles of ants and mountain lions, and presses, again and again, for rigour and vigour to be brought to bear on our search for meaning. The time is right, he suggests, for us to understand more fully that quest for knowledge, for "Homo sapiens, the first truly free species, is about to decommission natural selection, the force that made us .... Soon we must look deep within ourselves and decide what we wish to become." Wilson's wisdom, eloquently expressed in the pages of this grand and lively summing-up, will be of much help in that search.

9/11 - Buch

Das Buch der Loos-Bar habe ich naturgemäß noch gestern Abend ausgelesen. Es hatte ja nur knapp über 100 Seiten, davon jede Menge Fotos und Rezepte für Cocktails. Aber trotzdem ein sehr schönes Buch, und auch ein Stück Zeitgeschichte.

Heute Abend - morgens war ich irgendwie zu konfus um mir ein Buch auszusuchen - habe ich mich für einen Roman zum 11. September entschieden.  Was ich bisher angelesen habe, gefällt mir ganz gut - aber auf Englisch wäre es mir lieber gewesen.

Meine neue Lektüre:

Don DeLILLO

Falling Man

Kurzbeschreibung: Ein kühnes Meisterwerk -Don DeLillos großer Roman über den 11. September. New York in Asche und Rauch am 11. September. In eindringlichen Bildern zeichnet Don DeLillo den Ablauf der Ereignisse nach: von den Tätern zu den Opfern, von Hamburg nach New York. In unvergesslichen Szenen entsteht das Leben einer Familie, die berührende Geschichte einer Liebe, das Leben nach der Katastrophe. Keith Neudecker, der im World Trade Center gearbeitet hat, kann sich am 11. 9. aus einem der brennenden Türme retten. Er sieht, was geschieht, ohne es zu begreifen, und schlägt sich wie in Trance zu seiner Ex-Frau Lianne und seinem kleinen Sohn Justin durch. In ihrer Verzweiflung klammern sich Keith und Lianne aneinander, sie wollen aus der Einsamkeit der Angst in ein gemeinsames Leben zurückfinden. Gespräche, vor allem in Liannes Familie, kreisen um den Schock, um den Terrorismus als ständige Bedrohung. Justin und seine Freunde versuchen im Spiel ihre Angst vor den Terroristen zu überwinden. Keith durchlebt immer wieder das Trauma der Flucht aus den Türmen, und Lianne irrt ziellos durch die Stadt. Und dann sieht sie voller Entsetzen Falling Man, einen Performance-Künstler. Nur mit einem Seil gesichert, stürzt er sich als Chronist des Zeitalters des Terrors hoch oben von den Wolkenkratzern in die Tiefe. Der Terror bestimmt die Realität, aus der sich Keith, letztlich unfähig zu lieben, in die glitzernde Scheinwelt von Las Vegas zurückzieht - als professioneller Pokerspieler. Lianne und Justin bleiben zurück in New York. Mit seiner großen sprachlichen Kunst und seiner packenden Erzählweise gelingt es Don DeLillo in »Falling Man«, das scheinbar Unsagbare überzeugend in Wort zu fassen.

Wiener Institution

Gestern Abend habe ich das Vampirbuch ausgelesen, es war ganz nett - aber ich habe schon bessere gelesen. Vor allem die Kapitel über die "modernen" Psivampire und den Zusammenhang von Gothic und Vampiren hätte man sich sparen können. In dem Buch waren aber auch sehr schöne Zeichnung und offenbar kenner der Illustrator Jonathan BARRY meinen Mann, denn diese Zeichnung hat mich doch verblüfft.

Heute Abend beginne ich dann mit einem dünnen Buch (mit vielen Fotos) über eine alte Wiener Institution, das ich sicher noch am Abend auslesen werde.
