Neu zum Lesen und neu gekauft

Das Buch über Linz habe ich gestern in der Straßenbahn schon wieder ausgelesen und es hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Es war ganz interessant man hat viel über Linz erfahren.

Heute morgen habe ich dann mit einem weiteren Buch über Literatur begonnen, ausserdem ist wieder ein Raten-Päckchen von Amazon gekommen.

Gestern Abend habe ich meinen Kathy Reichs-Krimi ausgelesen und war wieder begeistert. Diesesmal hat Temperance Brennan nur in Charlotte gewirkt, am Rande der NASCAR-Rennen. Eigentlich war das Buch um gute 100 Seiten zu kurz.

Heute habe ich begonnen - und auch fast ausgelesen - ein Buch über Linz. Der Autor schreibt ganz witzig und sehr informativ und macht direkt Lust darauf, Linz zu besuchen.

Nachdem ich gestern Abend das Vampirbuch ausgelesen hatte, mußte ich mich heute Früh sehr schnell für ein neues Buch entscheiden. Ich habe mich wieder für ein Buch über's Lesen entschieden.

Vampire im August

Heute habe ich das Chabon Buch ausgelesen und es hat mir gut gefallen. Die Geschichte der beiden Abenteurer war witzig erzählt, auch wenn es sich um fiktive Länder im Mittelalter gehandelt hat. Chabon ist ein guter Schriftsteller, auch wenn mir das Buch um Kavalier und Clay bisher am besten von ihm gefallen hat.

Abends habe ich dann mit meinem monatlichen Vampir-Buch begonnen, und mich wieder für ein Sachbuch entschieden.

Wieder etwas Neues

In der Strassenbahn habe ich heute die 100 Must Reads über historische Romane ausgelesen. Es hat mir wieder sehr gut gefallen und viele der vorstellten Schriftsteller und Romane kenne ich auch. Gelesen habe ich zwar nur wenige - aber immerhin sind sie mir bekannt.

Auf dem Weg nach Meidling werde ich folgendes Buch beginnen:

Gestern Abend habe ich das Buch über den ersten Weltkrieg ausgelesen. Es war ganz interessant in den Bildern zu sehen, wie Propaganda gemacht wurde und wie sehr sich die Wirklichkeit von dieser Propaganda unterschieden hat.

Heute beginne ich dann mit einem Buch, dessen beide andere Teile mir sehr gut gefallen haben und die mich sehr interessiert haben. Ich bin schon gespannt darauf, welche Bücher ich von diesem 100 Must Read kenne.

Neues über Malta

Heute hat mir der Postbote ein Päckchen mit zwei weiteren Malta-Büchern gebracht. Eigentlich wollte ich ein ganz anderes Buch haben und habe die zwei nur wegen des Portos mitbestellt. Dann gab es meinen ursprünglichen Wunsch aber nicht mehr, sodaß nur die beiden mitbestellten Bücher geliefert wurden. Beide sind aber natürlich auch sehr interessant.

Heute Abend habe ich die maltesischen Kurzgeschichten ausgelesen, die nicht schlecht waren - mich aber auch nicht total überzeugt haben. Manche haben mir gut gefallen, bei manchen war der Stil mehr als gewöhnungsbedürftig. Und oft habe ich mich mit dem inneren Monolog und dem direkten Dialog nicht wirklich ausgekannt.

Später habe ich dann noch dieses Buch begonnen:

Malta literarisch

Gestern Abend habe ich den Vampir-Roman ausgelesen, der mir wieder sehr gut gefallen hat. Heute Morgen mußte ich mich dann schnell für ein neues Buch entscheiden und ich habe mich für einen dünnen Kurzgeschichtenband eines maltesischen Schriftstellers entschieden. Bisher gefällt es mir ganz gut, obwohl der Schreibstil etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig ist.

Sookie Stackhouse im August

Gestern Abend habe ich die Witwen von Eastwick ausgelesen und es war wieder ein Updike vom Feinsten. Komischerweise haben wir die Hexen von Eastwick ja überhaupt nicht gefallen, aber dieses Buch war wirklich wieder ein typischer Updike. Und so habe ich mich entschieden von Sukie (Rougemont), einer der Hexen und Witwen von Eastwick zu Sookie (Stackhouse), der Kellnerin aus dem Merlotte's in Bon Temps zu wechseln.

Auf der Fahrt nach Mariahilf begonnen:

Plot summary: The novel takes place in December. Bill, working on a secretive computer program, informs Sookie he has to travel away in order to complete the program. Days later, a werewolf targeting Sookie comes into her working spot, Merlotte's, but he is eliminated by Bubba, sent on Eric's orders, before he can harm Sookie. As night falls, Eric and his employees tell Sookie that Bill had actually been in Mississippi, where his former lover and maker Lorena had summoned him. They continue to tell Sookie that Bill has since then gone missing, and Eric speaks of his suspicions on Lorena's involvement. He also states that the vampire queen of Louisiana will need to receive Bill's secret project on its due date, if Eric wishes not to compromise his life. Since Eric is unable to interrogate humans or vampires in the territory of Mississippi vampire king Russell Edgington without provoking a war, he invites Sookie to come along to Mississippi and utilize her telepathy to locate Bill. Sookie agrees, but is shocked at Bill's possible betrayal of her.

The next day, Sookie is introduced to Alcide Herveaux, a werewolf sent by Eric to help Sookie circulate in the supernatural community of Jackson, Mississippi. Sookie takes a liking to Alcide's physique and personality. In Jackson, Alcide escorts her to a local vampire bar, Josephine's, generally known as Club Dead. In this club, Sookie learns by telepathy that Bill is being held captive and that Russell Edgington is possibly involved. She meets Edgington when he aids her after a confrontation with a were patron angered at Sookie rebuffing his sexual advances. Edgington insists they come in the next night as well. In the same night, Sookie is confronted by Alcide's jealous ex-girlfriend Debbie Pelt, a shapeshifter who, despite being at her own engagement party, is furious with Sookie presenting herself as Alcide's escort.

The next day, Sookie and Alcide discover the dead body of the Club Dead patron making unwanted advances at Sookie in their closet. After disposing of the body, that is later revealed to have been an assailant aiming for Sookie killed by Bubba, the duo head out for another night in Club Dead, where Sookie meets her friend Tara Thornton as another vampire's escort. However, she discovers the Fellowship of the Sun, an anti-vampire organization prominently featured in Living Dead in Dallas, has come in Club Dead intent on killing vampires. While preventing the Fellowship from staking one of Russell Edgington's employees, she herself is staked and receives medical attention at Edgington's mansion. Sookie shares an intimate moment with Eric, but Bubba informs them Bill is being tortured in one of Edgington's poolhouses.

Lieblingsschriftsteller John Updike

Nachdem ich das Buch über John Updike heute in der Straßenbahn ausgelesen habe, beginne ich bei meiner nächsten Straßenbahnfahrt gleich direkt mit einem Buch von John Updike.

The Widows of Eastwick

Alexandra, the fleshy Earth Mother; Jane, the wasp-tongued snob; and Sukie, a would-be a sexpot operating beyond her expiration date, have each survived the second marriages that took place following their flight from Eastwick in the early '70s, after a rival, Jenny Gabriel, died as a result of their spell. Where before they were strong, sassy, lusty and empowered, now in late middle-age they are vulnerable, fearful and in thrall to their aging bodies. Witchcraft is now beyond them; when they try to resurrect their supernatural powers to atone for their guilt, an inadvertent death ensues. While Updike remains amazingly capable of capturing women's thoughts about their bodies and their sex lives, the plot never gains momentum; the first hundred pages, in fact, are tedious travelogues covering the widows' travels to Egypt and China. Updike's observations about culture and social disharmony flash with their customary brilliance—a less than sparkling Updike novel is still an Updike novel.
