Mark TWAIN
A Tramp Abroad

Kurzbeschreibung: Twain's account of travelling in Europe, "A Tramp Abroad" (1880), sparkles with the author's shrewd observations and highly opinionated comments on Old World culture, and showcases his unparalleled ability to integrate humorous sketches, autobiographical tidbits, and historical anecdotes in a consistently entertaining narrative. Cast in the form of a walking tour through Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, "A Tramp Abroad" includes among its adventures a voyage by raft down the Neckar and an ascent of Mount Blanc by telescope, as well as the author's attempts to study art - a wholly imagined activity Twain 'authenticated' with his own wonderfully primitive pictures included in this volume.

Ben AARONOVITCH
Rivers of London

Product Description: My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden . . . and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

Bee ROWLATT
May WITWIT
Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad
The True Story of an Unlikely Friendship

Product Description: "Would you brave gun-toting militias for a cut and blow dry?"

May’s a tough-talking, hard-smoking, lecturer in English. She’s also an Iraqi from a Sunni-Shi’ite background living in Baghdad, dodging bullets before breakfast, bargaining for high heels in bombed-out bazaars and battling through blockades to reach her class of Jane Austen-studying girls. Bee, on the other hand, is a London mum of three, busy fighting off PTA meetings and chicken pox, dealing with dead cats and generally juggling work and family while squabbling with her globe-trotting husband over the socks he leaves lying around the house.

They should have nothing in common.

But when a simple email brings them together, they discover a friendship that overcomes all their differences of culture, religion and age. Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad is the story of two women who share laughter and tears, and swap their confidences, dreams and fears. And, between the grenades, the gossip, the jokes and the secrets, they also hatch an ingenious plan to help May escape the bombings of Baghdad .

Kaum geliefert - schon gelesen

Mein Neues:

Sam WASSON
Fifht Avenue, 5 A. M.
Audrey Hapburn and Breakfast at Tiffany's

Backcover: Before Breakfast at Tiffany's Audrey Hepburn was still a little-known actress with few film roles to speak of; after it - indeed, because of it - she was one of the world's most famous fashion, style and screen icons. It was this film that matched her with Hubert de Givenchy's "little black dress". Meanwhile, Truman Capote's original novel is itself a modern classic selling huge numbers every year, and its high-living author of perennial interest. Now, this little book tells the story of how it all happened: how Audrey got the role (for which at first she wasn't considered, and which she at first didn't want); how long it took to get the script right; how it made Blake Edwards' name as a director after too many trashy films had failed to; and how Henry Mancini's soundtrack with its memorable signature tune 'Moon River' completed the irresistible package. This is the story of how one shy, uncertain, inexperienced young actress was persuaded to take on a role she at first thought too hard-edged and amoral - and how it made Audrey Hepburn into gamine, elusive Holly Golightly in the little black dress - and a star for the rest of her life.

Mein Neues:

Becca WILCOTT
Truly, Madly, Deadly
The Unofficial True Blood Companion

Product Description: This companion to the wildly popular HBO series True Blood is at once an introductory guide to the first two seasons of the vampire saga and a treasure trove for the legions of true believers who follow the show. Created by Alan Ball, the Oscar-winning writer of American Beauty and creator of HBO's cult ensemble sensation Six Feet Under, True Blood surpassed The Sopranos as the largest-ever audience for a cable show at more than 12.4 million viewers a week. It has revitalized the career of Oscar-winner Anna Paquin and has introduced international audiences to Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgård, and Ryan Kwanten and an extensive, award-winning cast. Exclusive interviews, in-depth biographies of cast members, an episode guide, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes flesh out the fictional characters as well as the actors who inhabit the roles. Some of the underlying themes of the series—such as the politics of race, sexuality, and gender—are explored, and chapters on paranormal phenomena and the literary and cinematic histories of vampires are also included. In addition, this analysis offers an introduction to author Charlaine Harris, whose popular Sookie Stackhouse novels were the inspiration for the television series, as well as a discussion of the role of the fan base and social media in the phenomenal rise of this television sensation.
