Wien's Unterwelt

Wie schon gedacht, habe ich das Buch übers Lesen gestern Abend noch ausgelesen - was bei 84 Seiten allerdings auch keine große Leistung darstellt. Ich konnte Anna Quindlen in Vielem zustimmen und es war ein tolles Essay.

 

Heute morgen habe ich dann dazu gegriffen:

In ihrem Erlebnisbericht zeichnen sie ein authentisches Bild dieser im Verborgenen existierenden Seite Wiens, sie dokumentieren Plätze und Orte, die bald für immer unzugänglich oder zerstört sein werden. Ein Buch, das auch den wissenden Wienkenner verblüffen wird.

Lesen verändert das Leben

Mein neues Buch ist eigentlich nur ein Essay, in dem Anna Quindlen beschreibt, wie Lesen ihr Leben verändert hat. Bisher habe ich nur 22 Seiten gelesen, aber ich kann der Autorin nur zustimmen, den Lesen verändert das Leben, und ich bin ja eine passionierte Leseratte und Büchersammlerin.

Most of those so-called middlebrow readers would have readily admitted that the Iliad set a standard that could not be matched by What Makes Sammy Run? or Exodus. But any reader with common sense would also understand intuitively, immediately, that such comparisons are false, that the uses of reading are vast and variegated and that some of them are not addressed by Homer.

The Canon, censorship, and the future of publishing, not to mention that of reading itself, are all subjects Quindlen addresses with intelligence and optimism in a book that may not change your life, but will no doubt remind you of other books that did.

Neues zum Hobby Schreiben

Gestern Abend habe ich meinen Liebesroman ausgelesen, war ganz nett - allerdings war die Übersetzung wieder einmal eine Katastrophe. Ich habe von Sarah Mason ja schon mal ein Buch gelesen, allerdings im Original und das war wesentlich besser. Ausserdem hat mir der Übersetzer den Ausdruck "zu Tode gelutscht" gestohlen ;-)

 

Heute Abend beginne ich dann mit einem weiteren 200 Seiten Buch, das ich bald ausgelesen haben sollte - vor allem, weil es nicht wirklich für die U-Bahn geeignet ist. Aber wer weiß, vielleicht schreibe ja ich den nächsten "50 Shades of Grey-Bestseller".

Endlich etwas Neues

Gestern habe ich es endlich geschaft, die Biographie über Jim Thompson auszulesen. Ich glaube, ich habe noch nie für etwas mehr als 200 Seiten so lange gebraucht. Das war keine Biographie, sondern eine Schlaftablette. Viel zu wenig über das Leben von Jim Thompson, und gar nichts über seine Kindheit und Jugend. Das Buch beginnt mehr oder weniger mit dem 2. Weltkrieg und handelt zum größten Teil von der amerikanischen Aussenpolitik in den 40er, 50er und 60er Jahren in Asien, von Thailands innerpolitischen Verstrickungen und von vielen anderen Geheimdienst-Männern in Asien. Jim Thompson kommt in manchen Kapiteln nur in ein oder zwei Sätzen vor und am Ende war ich froh, das er verschwunden ist. Kein Vergleich zur Biographie über Bob Fosse.

 

Deshalb - und auch wegen der extremen Hitze - habe ich mir leichte Kost für mein nächstes Buch ausgewählt. Es ist ganz nett, aber auch kein großer Renner...

Biographie im Juni

Durch den Urlaub Anfang Juni komme ich erst jetzt dazu, meine Juni-Biographie zu beginnen und ich habe mich für ein zu Thailand passendes Thema entschlossen.

Rapunzel neu erzählt

Schon am Montag habe ich mir einem neuen Buch begonnen, wieder ein Buch für Jugendliche und wieder ein Märchen. Ein neues Rapunzel, geschrieben von Alex Flinn, von der ich ja schon mehrere, neu erzählte Märchen gelesen habe.

Auch aus dem Urlaub gibt es wieder Neuzugänge zu vermelden. Meine Mutter hat Robert ein Buch zum Englisch-Lernen geschenkt, sie hatte ein falsches eingepackt. Und ich bin im Souvenirgeschäft sowie im 2-Euro-Shop fündig geworden.
